How We Got Started

2002 the founder of Oil of Ru was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease called Sar-coi-dosis, a rare condition that causes small patches of red and swollen tissue, called granulomas, to develop in the organs of the body. In her case, it was multi-symptom sarcoidosis involving, her eyes, lungs, muscles, joints and skin.

At the point of a near death experience in 2004, she opted for a holistic protocol over traditional medicine which changed the entire course of her life. Extensive research led her to many avenues, including the Wildwood Lifestyle Center, Chattanooga, TN. There she learned how to heal the body incorporating the 8 Principles of Life, which demonstrates how to reliably combat disease and achieve optimal health through nutrition and lifestyle. Such are (NEWSTART) Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air, Rest and Trust in Divine Power.
A wise soul, adored by many and an unbeknownst born healer, humanitarian, and vessel of faith, much of her work conceptually pours from a pool of innate gifts, a desire to change lives and spirit encounters via visions and dreams.

With increasing interest in the world of ayurvedic practice, nearly 2 decades as an essential oil enthusiast, student of alternative healing and simply an inquisitive soul, she had a visitation that lead to what she calls 'The Ruach Experience' thus Oil of Ru became!

Genie Butter by Oil of Ru, short for Ruach (pronounced roo-akh or roo-ah) means breath, spirit.

Awakened by excitement, the first batch of Genie Butter was created in her small kitchen at home in Silver Spring, MD gathering oils and butters around the house. The entire household quickly replaced all lotions, balms and butters with her butter. Eventually she shipped her butter to California in empty deer-park water bottles. Hey, it was more about the book than the cover back then.

Genie Butter manifested first in a dream during one of the most financially trying seasons she and her family had ever encountered, covid-19. Her entire household was out of work and relying upon unstable means to cover overhead and expenses. Bit by bit with the help of a few friends, she began investing in the equipment and supplies necessary to launch Oil of Ru.

October 18th of 2021, which was her 56th birthday, Genie Butter by Oil of Ru made an official debut on Instagram live. 75 jars sold and it was established that Genie Butter was more than a body butter it was a way of life through intentional self-love and self-care.
Sonya Ru Ward, Founder and CEO hold a Master of Arts in Industrial and Organization Psychology and a Bachelors in Marketing and Communications.
